The strong rigid plastic of the five-gallon water-cooler jugs (polycarbonate) imparts no taste, but pregnant women might want to avoid drinking large amounts of water from these containers. A lab analysis showed the "worrisome chemical, bisphenol-A," which might pose a risk to developing fetuses, as suggested by animal studies. Eight of the ten 5-gallon polycarbonate jugs in the Consumer Union review leached bisphenol-A into water.
What is BIS-PHENOL-A (BPA)?
Bis phenol A is a chemical compound found in some hard, clear, lightweight plastics
and resins. It's used in the production of various types of food and drink containers,
compact discs, electronics and automobile parts, and as a liner in some metal cans.
In January 2010 the FDA finally shifted their stance on BPA and has classified BPA
as a "chemical of concern". The FDA is encouraging the public to limit their
exposure to this chemical. This is a direct quote from the official government
update on Bisphenol-A: "... FDA is supporting reasonable steps to reduce human exposure to BPA, including actions by industry and recommendations to consumers on food preparation." To read the full FDA update visit: www.fda.gov
In a study published in September 2008 in the Journal of the American Medical
Association, adults with higher BPA levels in their urine were linked to higher risks
for heart disease and diabetes.
Are you actually still drinking this stuff?
Rodent studies of bis phenol-A used in polycarbonate bottles, food cans and other products, have linked the synthetic estrogen to a host of cancers, early onset puberty, obesity and Type-II Diabetes. Scientists say the chemical can alter cell behavior at very low levels - in the parts per trillion range - yet humans are consistenly exposed to BPA at levels 10 to 100 times greater.
According to USA TODAY: Other Health Risks Associated With BPA in Rodents include: Breast Cancer, Hyperactivity, Sperm Defects, Prostate Cancer & Disease, Impaired Immune Function, Impaired Reproductive Development.

Adding to a growing sense of unease about the chemical's potential effects was a study released before federal hearings Tuesday that linked exposure to bis phenol A with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and liver-enzyme abnormalities in adults.
Researchers said the study, in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, offered the first scientific evidence that adults with higher levels of BPA in their bodies were more likely to develop such diseases. This month the federal National Toxicology Program reported the chemical may affect the development of the brains and prostate glands of fetuses and young children.
Do you really think that water is clean?
CROSS CONTAMINATION:
5 gallon water bottles are prime candidates for cross contamination because the
customers must handle the bottle in order to replace it when one is empty. When anyone
removes the cap from the bottle, the only way to position it on the cooler is to place their
hand around the neck of the bottle. This means whatever germs or bacteria that are on the
hands of the person handling the bottle are now transferred right into the water reservoir.
BACTERIA BUILD UP IN BOTTLE:
Many people have no idea that bacteria will grow inside of a water cooler unless the
cooler is being PROPERLY sanitized on a regular basis. As water sits stagnant in
an often times plastic reservoir, bio-film/algae colonization begins. The unsealed
reservoir is dark, wet and exposed to air; this creates the ideal breeding ground
for the bio-film, which is a slimy layer of Algae, Bacteria, Fungi, and Protozoa
CROSS CONTAMINATION FROM THE AIR:
In order for water to flow out of the bottle, it has to be replaced by air. Everyone is
familiar with the "glut-glut" noise and rising bubbles generated in the cooler when water
flows out. The air that causes this is coming from the space outside and around the water cooler. Therefore, any airborne contaminants are being transferred into the water supply. In environments such as printing companies and auto body shops, strong and dangerous chemicals in the air finds their way into the bottled water cooler.
READY FOR SOME CLEAN, FRESH, PURE WATER?
Bottled water systems do not deliver pure water. Chemicals, bacteria, slime and other contaminants can flow freely in these unprotected systems. Pure Planet Waters uses technology to protect against these problems, ensuring that you are delivered a continuous supply of pure, fresh, great tasting, uncontaminated drinking water at the touch of a button!
